Visiting our friends.

This weekend we paid a visit to our artists friends Saad Ali and Monique Bastiaans who live near Valencia. We shared our friendship and talked about art till words came out our ears. Monique explained the finishing touches of her exhibition later this month in Valencia, and Saad showed his sketches for large fresco´s. Contagious and inspiring.

Monique Bastiaans has lived in Spain since 1989 and is moving between different styles of three-dimensional work with the same ease as she is using varied materials. Not only does she produce monumental transparent installations and temporary interventions in the public domain, but also colourful objects of plastic, glass, stone and ceramics. All her work shows an inseparable link between form, colour and material.

Saad Ali’s magical paintings find their origin in Arabic mythology and Iraqi cultural history. Through his education and long stay in Florence, Saad Ali became acquainted with the western style of traditional painting. From these rich sources he forms his own mythical world, in which faith in a joyful future is depicted. He was born in Iraq in1949 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and Perugia.

Wedding soon

Almost 10 years ago I painted in oil the portrait of our daughter when she was 18 years old. The watercolour painting is made some ten years earlier. End of next week we will celebrate her wedding in Madrid.
I am glad that I painted some portraits of her. I never think in terms of eternity and I don’t consider my work so important that everyone will have to remember me after hundred years. But these portraits are different to me. You will understand.

Summer in Chelva

Our vegetable garden in Chelva

My blog is not only on portrait painting as I said in the beginning. As little I will write about the Opening Celebration of the Olympic Games in London last Friday although I loved to see it… no, about our daily life here: Summer in Chelva. You know we live in the small and beautiful Spanish village of Chelva, Valencia. We are proud to have our own vegetable garden beside the house. This morning we were up early, before the heat of the day. I made the little protection bags to the grapes. My wife did the tomatoes.

Can you imagine what it is to work in your garden in the early, fresh hours of this splendid july Sunday morning and having this gorgeous panorama?

If there was an Olympic Medal to win in the section Good Living, I am sure we would challenge for Gold.

Forest fire near Chelva

When I started this blog I said I would write not only about portrait painting. Also about the village where we live. This afternoon a huge forest fire endangered our region. Six airplanes and two helicopters are still trying to extinguish the fire. The picture I took from our garden.

Photographers in Chelva

Last Saturday a group of photographers was here in Chelva. They took lots of photos of the environment and snapshots of us all there. You will see more later. We had a wonderful day.

Cleaning the landfill surroundings

Last weekend a group of volunteers cleaned the hills around the former Chelva landfill.
We were about 30 people. It is incredible what you can do in one hour! We will repeat this action end of this month at the other side of the village.

Betty Mus & cebollas blog

Just some pictures that I took today. You can see the onions are harvested and are drying in the shadow. Our dog Betty is the watching over them, probably she likes the smell. The kitchen garden is my wife´s pride and joy.

Around Chelva.

This morning we made a small trip with family from Holland. When I show visitors the region where we live it gives me always the idea that I look with their eyes and see once again the beauty of the surroundings of Chelva.

My brother in law took this picture of me that reminded me of the song Loosing my religion: That´s me in the corner.

I never miss my country but…

We are living for 23 years now in Spain and I still enjoy our life here very much. Nice country and nice people. I never miss Holland but sometimes when I see my older watercolours I want to go for a short walk in the polder.
