As I told earlier, I make the drawing in red pencil. But this drawing does not give enough guidance once it is covered with oil paint, although oil paint is always more or less transparent. (some colours more than others)
- Retracing the drawing with a thin layer of acrylics helps me to find my way.
- Secondly the layer of this acrylic paint serves as a kind of fixative. There is no need to spray the drawing in advance.
- A third benefit is the surface. You can paint fantastic on top of an acrylic layer.
Having said this I want to suggest that you surely must try to make the underpainting in oil as well. To quote Einstein: “The only source of knowledge is experience”.
Your portraits are wonderful, the people seem so real. I’m sure I could learn a lot from you.
Hi,
Water-based oils are also fantastic for starting a painting. I have used acrylic..but found out that acrylic is actually “fat”. I now make my own gesso from rabbit skin glue to avoid acrylic gesso when using oil.
Hi Kim.
That sounds good. I still have to start with the waterbased oils that I have here. Soon time will come to give it a try.
Hi Ben, what color of that acrylic you used for the underpaint ?
Probably burnt sienna.
The underpainting I usually make in raw sienna. darker accents in burnt sienna.

wave Ben: I am a self-taught painter, I have no school, but you know I found their website and I’m amazed at what you teach … everything has been of great help … soon you will hear from me, to buy their lesson books or videos. …. The Bible says: “He who gives to the poor lends to God” I mean the poor knowledge of their techniques. VERY GRATEFUL FOR YOUR GENEROCIDAD FROM CHILE
I would like to see more paintings.
I will show my last portrait commission right away in a new post.
Kind regards.
Ben
should i put any sort of solution on the paper to start the oil paint?
what is the name of the solution?
I would try gesso. Apply at least two or three layers.
