Pre-mixing flesh tones for portrait painting
Starting a portrait I always prepare my palette carefully. In the picture you see the palette that I made for the video tutorial “Portrait of a little girl”.
People often have difficulties with mixing the flesh colours. And indeed in the beginning it is not so easy. In all my videos I spend a lot of attention to the explanation how I mix my colours. In this demonstration, the flesh tones are of a half-dark skin complexion.
Your videos are a joy to follow, your voice is very clear and the summary explanations easy to follow and understand.
Thank you so much for posting this, I can’t wait until the video is for sale 🙂 I am a self taught artist and I always just so happen to make flesh tones (a guessing game rather than a technique). In all of your portrait demonstrations you provided a base and technique (you provided the name of the colors, and you use a color swatch against the original subject). I usually have the hardest time with the highlights on dark skin, any suggestions? I attached my website. Thank you so much, I really love your work.
Hi. Highlights on any skin usually are cool colors. So white + crimson or white + ultramarine. On dark skin white + ultramarine can be the solution.
Thank you for our response and for that tip, I did not know that.
I love your work! You have taught me that you don’t have to do micro details to gain likeness and instill beauty in portrait art. I learned most of my oil painting art techniques through uTube videos and websites via generous professionals like yourself. I am so grateful that you are willing to share, but I plan to enroll in as many live workshops as I can next year. I look forward to your demonstration on the flesh tones of a half-dark skin complexion. Do you know when you will post? I think purchasing your videos will also be a good investments. Thanks so much!
Hi Jeanette. I am glad to hear that you like my video tutorials. Youtube is great to learn…and to teach! The tutorial of the half dark skin complexion will take some more time than I thought. I was not really happy with the digital quality and I am repeating the editing. So be patient.
Kind regards.
Ben.
