Flipped value contrast in portrait painting

An entire book can be written about value contrast in portrait painting. I have also read a lot about it myself. But an image explains more than so many words. That is what at least I always think.

So here are my simple examples. A few times I apply this proven method of flipped value contrast in portrait painting. I do this to obtain a dynamic value contrast in a painting. It is based on a very simple rotation principle.

  1. Please explain completely about Flipped value contrast in portrait painting to understand properly as I could not understand with the example portraits.

    1. When you look at the lady on the chair you see that the background from the bottom to the top gradually gets darker. The subject is the other way around. Her head is lighter than the background and going down the forms are darker than the background. The other image the same, but from the left to the right. Left the face is lighter than the background and right the hair is darker than the background.
